Muong Culture
The word Mường in Vietnamese is related to the word mueang from the Tai languages, meaning "cultivated land" or "community". Over 1.45 million people, concentrated most in Hoa Binh province (30km away) and Thanh Hoa mountains.
Banyan Tree
Each Northern Vietnamese village has at least one Banyan tree. There can be two locations to grow (one in front of village gate, other on the farming field). Along with the water well, they are symbols of father (sky) and mother (earth). According to the 5 elements rule, the Banyan tree will be on the left side of the communal house.
Turtle Communal House
For its longevity, turtle is Muong sacred symbol and wish of a peaceful life. In Muong epic, turtle taught man how to build their first house: “my four legs are the pillars, my shell is the roof, my spine is the support”. Muong also invented Turtle calendar to check good day for marriage.
